The Benefits of Superfood Sorghum: How the Best Puffs Just Got Better

Superfood Sorghum has officially landed at MightyMe HQ! With the recent addition of organic sorghum to all of our Nutty Puffs flavors, Mission MightyMe has created the first and only puffs made with more than 50% nuts + this amazing superfood ingredient! But don’t worry: we promise they are the same nutritious and delicious puffs you and your kids know and love – with the exact same % nut protein, same gluten-free goodness, same great taste and meltability - just with a new ancient grain that takes nutrition to the next level.
To catch you up to speed: we’ve swapped out organic rice for organic sorghum because we’re always looking to raise the bar for our customers and sorghum is one of the healthiest ancient grains around. But rest assured that peanuts and tree nuts – with all of their nutritional benefits – are still the star ingredients!
You might be wondering, what exactly is sorghum, and what do we mean by words like “superfood” and “ancient grain”? Well, you’re in the right place…and trust us, you’ll soon see why if there was ever an ingredient working overtime, it’s this one! Let’s dive in.

Ancient Grain, Modern Mission

Although sorghum is not quite as well-known in the U.S. just yet, it’s actually one of the most consumed grains across the globe. It’s commonly referred to as a “superfood” – nutrient-dense foods that provide a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds.
Sorghum is an ancient grain and a multipurpose crop. “Ancient grains” are defined as being largely unchanged by selective breeding over thousands of years – other well-known grains in this category include quinoa, barley, and farro. Overall, ancient grains are considered to be more "primitive" or “natural” compared to modern grains like wheat, rice, and corn. Sorghum was first domesticated in northeastern Africa, and the earliest known record of sorghum is from an archaeological dig near the Egyptian-Sudanese border dating back to 8,000 B.C. (now that’s ancient!). It is thought to have been brought to the Americas around the mid-18th century. The U.S. is now the leading producer of grain sorghum, which is made from the seeds of the sorghum plant.
Ancient grains are buzzed about for their nutritional value, unique flavors, and even versatility in cooking. Plus, they tend to be more nutrient-dense – meaning higher levels of protein, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Sorghum is also naturally gluten-free, making it easier to digest (really, what’s not to love?!).
Tiny Puffs, Mighty Nutrition
TLDR: your favorite puffs just got a glow-up! Nutty Puffs have been a crowd favorite for making early and often nut introduction easy and enjoyable AND providing a healthier alternative to traditional baby puffs. Now, our Nutty Puffs are powered by organic superfood sorghum, a highly nutritious and non-GMO grain with loads of health benefits – which means the best puff out there just got even better.
Here are just a few of the nutritional benefits of the powerhouse superfood sorghum (say that three times fast!):
-
Gluten-Free: Sorghum is naturally gluten-free and lectin-free! Organic sorghum flour has long been used as a replacement grain for everything from pizza crust and pretzels to waffles and muffins.
-
Rich in Vitamins and Minerals:
-
Protein, zinc, selenium and copper: Thanks to these micronutrients, sorghum supports a healthy immune system.
-
B-vitamins: Sorghum is a good source of B vitamins like niacin, thiamine, and riboflavin, which support energy production and brain function.
-
Iron: Sorghum contains iron, which helps in red blood cell production and prevents anemia.
-
Magnesium: The grain is also rich in magnesium, which is essential for muscle and nerve function, as well as bone health.
-
Phosphorus and Potassium: These minerals are important for maintaining electrolyte balance and healthy kidney function.
-
Rich in Fiber: Sorghum is high in dietary fiber, which aids digestion, helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and supports heart health. Fiber content also promotes satiety (keeping those tiny tummies full!) and acts as a prebiotic, supporting healthy gut bacteria and improving overall gut health.
-
Excellent Source of Plant-based Protein: Sorghum provides plant-based protein, essential for muscle repair, immune function, and overall growth.
-
Rich in Heart-Healthy Antioxidants: Sorghum contains polyphenols and antioxidants, which help protect cells from oxidative damage and reduce inflammation in the body.
We know, we know – it’s hard to believe those cute, chubby baby fingers can hold so much incredible nutrition in one tiny pincer grasp! Our small but mighty sorghum swap means every bite of MightyMe is now even better for growing bodies and tiny tummies.
And importantly, each pouch of puffs still has the exact same amount of nut protein as before, to adhere to our co-founder Dr. Gideon Lack’s research.
*Reminder: One pouch of MightyMe Peanut Butter Puffs per week has 7 grams peanut protein and meets the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) weekly recommendation for high-risk infants.*
*Two pouches of MightyMe Mixed Nut Butter Puffs (with 5 nuts) weekly = 10 grams nut protein (2 grams per nut).

Sustainable Superfood
To recap: Nutty Puffs are now even *more* nutritious thanks to the addition of superfood sorghum, and just as melt-in-your-mouth delicious as before. And to top it off, sorghum is not only good for kids, it’s also good for the planet (we told you sorghum is working overtime!).
Here are some ways that sorghum – a climate and water smart, resource-conserving crop – is giving back to Mother Earth:
-
Sorghum is a hardy and drought-resistant crop, meaning it can be grown in a wide variety of environments (i.e. different climates, soils, rainfall levels).
-
Compared to other grains, it has a much lower water footprint, making it an ideal crop for regions with water scarcity and helping to conserve precious water supplies.
-
Sorghum is often grown in rotation with other crops, which helps promote biodiversity.
-
Sorghum’s more efficient water usage and lower input requirements reduce the overall environmental costs of production, such as energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
-
Compared to many other crops, sorghum requires less fertilizer and has a deep root system that can help improve soil structure and prevent erosion.
Better for your little one AND the planet…now that’s a win-win.
