Same Puffs with Purpose….Now with Sorghum’s Superpower!

We’re so excited to announce a new product innovation that we’ve had in the works for quite some time. We’ve reformulated all of our Nutty Puffs recipes to replace Organic Rice with Organic Superfood Sorghum - one of the most nutritious, gluten-free and non-GMO ancient grains in the world - making the best puffs even better for kids and the planet.

After years of R&D, our team has crafted the ONLY puffs on the market that are more than 50% nuts + Superfood Sorghum. Once we had the new recipe dialed in, we knew it was an upgrade we had to share with the world. We are SO excited for your family to try the new, and even more nutritious Nutty Puffs. There is literally nothing like it on the market.

Don’t worry, everything else you love about Nutty Puffs is EXACTLY the same:

  • Still more than 50% nuts

  • Same EXACT nuts and % nut protein

  • Same delicious taste

  • Same meltability

  • Same gluten-free goodness

  • EVEN more nutritious

Check out our Q&A with our co-founder Catherine, to learn more about sorghum and our Superfood upgrade.

Why the switch from Organic Rice to Organic Sorghum?

We’ve been on a quest to create the most nutritious snacks possible through innovation that’s good for kids and the environment - and sorghum does both! Sorghum is high in  protein, fiber, antioxidants and nutrients, - making it one of the healthiest ancient grains in the world. Because of the way it’s grown, sorghum also doesn’t absorb potential contaminants, like heavy metals, as readily from the environment and it’s always non-GMO. While we’ve always tested our rice-based puffs to ensure they fall below California Prop 65 limits (the most protective in the nation) and met the high standards for Clean Label Project certification, we know families are looking to include other grains. Once we had sorghum R&D dialed in to perfection, we knew it was an upgrade we had to share with the world.

What is sorghum?

Sorghum is a non-GMO ancient grain that’s also a nutrition powerhouse, rich in antioxidants, nutrients, essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. Sorghum is one of the top five cereal crops in the world and the United States is the largest producer of grain sorghum (made from the seeds of the sorghum plant), globally. Sorghum also makes a beautiful gluten-free flour when ground into a powder form, which  is what we use in our new Nutty Puffs recipe.

How does this ingredient change impact taste and dissolvability?

Nutty Puffs with Superfood Sorghum dissolve just as quickly as the original puffs, so they are still perfect for babies starting solids and up. Most of our littlest taste testers actually couldn’t tell the difference between the sorghum superfood puffs and the OG puffs, though many parents (me included) think the new puffs taste even yummier. Sorghum has a subtle, neutral flavor that’s most similar to wheat flour, which makes it an easy swap for many recipes. We can’t wait for you to try them for yourself and let us know what you and your little one think!

Are Nutty Puffs still gluten-free?

Yes! Sorghum is a naturally gluten-free, non-GMO ancient grain. Nuts are also gluten-free so Nutty Puffs are still gluten-free.

Are Nutty Puffs still more than 50% nuts?

Yes! The nuts and nut protein levels in our Nutty Puffs are EXACTLY the same to adhere to our co-founder, Dr. Gideon Lack’s, seminal food allergy prevention research (LEAP and EAT). The only change is that the grain we use to “puff” the nut flours and nut butters into meltable, quick-dissolve puffs, is now Organic Sorghum rather than Organic Rice.

Is sorghum “healthy”? What are the benefits?

Yes, sorghum is healthy! In fact, sorghum qualifies for the FDA’s new “healthy” claim. Some of sorghum’s many health benefits include:

  • Antioxidant-rich, nutrient-rich, including  phytochemicals, essential vitamins, minerals and fiber

  • Excellent source of plant-based protein

  • Known as one of the highest protein grains

  • Provides  zinc, selenium and copper to support a healthy immune system

  • Excellent source of dietary fiber, which contributes to digestive health

  • Excellent source of protein, fiber, phosphorus, thiamin, niacin, copper, magnesium and  manganese

  • Good source of zinc, vitamin B6 and iron.

  • Naturally gluten-free and lectin-free

  • Sorghum has not been genetically modified, so currently all sorghum is non-GMO

Are there environmental benefits to sorghum as a crop?

Sorghum is a super sustainable, environmentally-friendly, water and resource-conserving crop. In fact, it requires 36% less water than other grains. It’s incredibly efficient in the conversion of solar energy and water. Sorghum is resistant to heat and drought and can grow in a variety of soils and climates. It helps reduce soil erosion by regenerating soil with increased organic matter, improves soil health and helps us conserve our planet’s precious resources. So sorghum is not only good for humans, it’s also good for the environment!

What was the R&D process like to reformulate?

Nuts are still the star ingredient in our Nutty Puffs and our mission to make it deliciously simple to regularly include nuts in children’s diets (as pediatricians now recommend), has not changed.

We spent years in R&D to figure out how to take peanuts and multiple tree nuts and combine them with a grain base to “puff” them into a quick-dissolve snack that would be safe (and delicious) for babies and kids. We didn’t like the ingredients in the few peanut puffs that were on the market (corn, palm oil, high salt content, sugar, natural flavors, etc), so we set out to make a more nutritious puff. We experimented with all the most nutritious ancient grains - quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, millet and sorghum - but couldn’t achieve the dissolvability we needed for our littlest customers. So we started with organic rice flour, but continually searched for ways to innovate to bring even more nutrition to our puffs. Last year, with some smart tweaks to our small-batch process, our genius R&D team was able to craft a Nutty Puff, using organic sorghum, that dissolved just as quickly, and tasted just as delicious as our OG puffs. And once we had the formulation down, we knew it was an upgrade we had to share with the world. We are SO excited for your family to try it and we hope you love it as much as we do.
