This, Not That: What to Look for (and What to Avoid) in Baby & Kids Snacks

As parents, we’re faced with a million decisions every day - especially when it comes to feeding our little ones. And when you’re standing in the grocery store, trying to decode ingredient lists, nutrition claims, and row after row of packaging, it can feel completely overwhelming.

At Mission MightyMe, we believe snacks should be simple, nourishing, functional and stress-free. That’s why we’re here to break down what to look for and what to steer clear of when it comes to choosing the best snacks for babies and kids.

Let’s dive in: “This, Not That” style.

1. This: Real, Organic, Non-GMO Ingredients

Not That: Unpronounceable Additives and Artificial Dyes

You shouldn’t need a PhD in chemistry to read a snack label! Look for organic, non-GMO ingredients you can pronounce - and ideally, ones you might have in your own kitchen.

🟢 Yes to: organic nuts, sorghum, real fruit
🔴 No to: maltodextrin, soy lecithin, seed oils like palm oil or artificial dyes

2. This: Plant-Based Protein Sources

Not That: Empty Carbs and Puff Fillers

Most traditional baby puffs are 99% rice, corn or another puffed grain, offering little nutritional value. While they’re light and airy, they can fall short in the nutrition and protein department - and don’t help regularly introduce important allergens like peanuts or tree nuts.

🟢 Yes to: nut-based snacks with real plant-based protein
🔴 No to: snacks that are 99% corn, rice or another puffed grain without plant protein

3. This: Smart Allergen Introduction

Not That: Avoidance or Delay

Pediatric guidelines now recommend introducing peanuts and other allergens early and keeping them in a child’s diet regularly. But many baby snacks still steer away from these ingredients based on outdated beliefs that babies should avoid allergens in infancy. Unless your little one has an existing food allergy, keeping common allergens like peanuts and tree nuts in their diet is recommended.*

🟢 Yes to: peanut and tree nut snacks for babies (as early as 4–6 months if your pediatrician gives the green light)
🔴 No to: Avoiding common allergens (unless your child has an existing food allergy)

4. This: Low to No Refined Sugars

Not That: Snacks Sweetened with Cane Sugar or Cane Syrup

🟢 Yes to: snacks without added refined sugars or sweeteners
🔴 No to: sweet, sugary treats disguised as snacks

5. This: No Mess + No Stress

Not That: Crumbs, Choking Hazards, or Sticky Fingers

Especially in the early months of starting solids, texture matters. You want something that dissolves easily, doesn’t create a mess, and can safely fit into your routine (and your diaper bag).

🟢 Yes to: quick-dissolve snacks that don’t leave a trail
🔴 No to: sticky, messy nut butters that can be a choking hazard, crumbly crackers, or “mess makers”

6. This: Transparency about Testing & Ingredients

Not That: Brands that Make You Dig for Test Results

🟢 Yes to: Clean Label Certified brands that are already proactively testing for more than 200 possible contaminants, including heavy metals, pesticides and plasticizers AND disclosing test results on their websites
🔴 No to: Brands that aren’t being transparent
